Copy Editing is about checking consistency, factual accuracy, legalities, development, plot, feeling and length.
First, we will read your document and give you feedback. If a major re-write is required, we’ll ask you to implement that and resubmit your book. Then we’ll get down to business!
Copy editing extends Line Editing and Proof Reading ensuring that whatever appears in public is accurate, easy to follow, fit for purpose, free of error, omission, inconsistency and repetition. We will pick up ambiguities and anomalies, check illustrations and captions, and alert you to possible legal issues such as libel and copyright. (Please be aware these are ultimately your responsibility).
For Novels we are also looking at plot structure, character development and motivation, theme, premise, symbolism, tension and pacing.
We will also check the length is appropriate for your genre which may entail some fierce cutting. (Items cut may be useful as giveaways in your marketing strategy)
It can still be a good idea to have a proof read once your document is complete and after the copy editing phase. Especially if the edit was extensive. Of course that’s entirely up to you.
